Personal Shows

When people have asked me to play personal shows over the years (which is happening more and more often, which I love), whether at their house, their wedding, their birthday, or whatever other ideas they have, I've written some version of thoughts like these:

...As far as the costs, I try to keep it reasonable and simple. I just ask for what I'd generally make playing a 'normal' club show or whatever, plus any travel expenses, etc. For a show anywhere in the US, it tends to be $1500-ish. Outside the US, $2500-ish. If you can afford to pay more, that's always welcome. If you can't, I've never let money get in the way of having the music in your life in a personal way. As with everything I do, I'm happy to work something out with you that feels fair and possible...

...You would, of course, have a guest list as big as you'd like. As for other folks coming (if you're open to that), I just do a donation thing. It's not so much about the money, it's about everyone contributing, seems to change the mood of the show. Many of the 'free' shows I've played over the years have felt unfocused and sorta lame. Strange how that works. Anyway, it's all about our ideas, so let me know yr thoughts, we'll figure it out...

...If you can't afford it yourself, if you and a bunch of friends want to get something together at a house or a club, I love that. It works pretty much the same, just with everybody chipping in. If everyone contributes the price of a decent meal or a movie for two, 50-ish people is all it really takes for just about anywhere in the US...

...Mostly, just thanks for thinking of having the music in your life this way. I look forward to hearing your ideas. Write to jonahstuff at gmail dot com anytime if you're curious about making somethin happen.
