These pics sum up the year / decade / life pretty well, and get me excited for 2020 & beyond. I think of:
SURRENDER: I had no idea how intense it would be at the base of the falls, naked, the cold & crashing of the water & air pretty literally taking my breath away. There was nothing to do but feel it. I know that I have little or no control over just about everything, except my reaction to everything. Whether I'm thinking about the state of the world, or money & aging & all the material things that don't matter but also really matter, or what happened before, or whatever comes next, or the mystery of moods & feelings... the only choice I've got is how I respond. Such a simple and obvious lesson, and a life's work to really feel it in my body & come from that pure place.
THE PHYSICAL, NON-HUMAN WORLD: Those eels are practically prehistoric. They live to 100ish, and travel thousands of miles on their internal GPS. I've always loved playing & moving my body, and being with non-human animals. As our interaction & identity gets less analog & more digital, I'm increasingly interested in being outside & unfiltered, nowhere near machines. As cities get more homogenous & crowded, I think about wild spaces without too many human animals around. I'm pretty sure the arc will keep bending in that direction.
TOGETHERNESS: I've known for a long time that I'm not for most people & most people aren't for me. That's been sad for me sometimes. Lately, it's liberating. I feel lucky to be connected with a sweet handful of creatures who want to be in the tenderwild with me. Whether at home or on tour, whether personally or 'professionally', I keep being taught to trust myself, be who I am, and see who sticks around. Again, wayyy easier said than done. I look forward to lots more learning that lesson in 2020, and for the rest of my life.
For anyone reading this, in this particular IDEAS place where we've chosen to be, just know that the support & kindness that you've shown me, all the shows & hellos that led to you reading this here on my weird little website (or in yr inbox)... you're the kind of togetherness I want around the music & ideas, you're the way I want to communicate, you're what I choose. I have mountains of songs & shows & thoughts from the past & future to share. I'll see you there.
Love,
Jonah
